Roof-to-Wall Connections & Hurricane Straps

Roof-to-wall connections are the hardware holding your roof framing to the walls. Florida's wind mitigation form rates them, weakest to strongest, as toe nails, clips, single wraps and double wraps, and stronger connections earn bigger insurance credits. A roof replacement is the moment you can see and document them. Leeward Roofing (CCC1337211) photographs what we find so your wind mitigation inspector has proof.

The four ratings

How Florida rates the connection

From the state wind mitigation form, weakest to strongest.

Toe nails

Nails driven at an angle through the rafter or truss into the top plate. The weakest rating, common in older homes.

Clips

Metal connectors nailed to the truss and the top plate on one side. A clear step up from toe nails.

Single wraps

A metal strap that wraps over the top of the truss and is nailed on both sides. Stronger uplift resistance.

Double wraps

Straps on both sides of the truss, each wrapped over the top. The strongest rating and the biggest credit.

Why it matters

What these connections do in a hurricane

Wind does not push a roof off. It lifts it.

Uplift

High wind over a roof creates suction that pulls the roof upward. The roof-to-wall connection is what keeps the framing attached to the house.

Insurance credits

Florida insurers must offer credits for documented wind-resistant features. Roof-to-wall connections, roof shape, deck attachment, secondary water barrier and opening protection are all rated. See wind mitigation discounts.

Documentation is everything

The inspector can only credit what they can see or verify. Attic photos now matter more: the wind mitigation form (OIR-B1-1802) was rewritten effective April 1, 2026 and requires attic photos.

During a re-roof

What we can check and document

Tear-off opens up parts of the house you normally cannot see.

Deck attachment

With the old roof off, the nailing of the deck to the trusses is visible and can be re-nailed to current code.

Connection photos

Where the connection is visible from the attic or the eave, photos taken during the job help your inspector rate it correctly.

Secondary water barrier

A re-roof is the time to add a sealed underlayment that can earn its own credit.

Get the inspection after

Schedule a new wind mitigation inspection once the new roof is final, so your insurer sees the upgrades. See roofing glossary for the terms.

24/7 Storm Response

Wind got under it? Do not wait for the next band.

Lifted shingles and displaced tile rarely reseal themselves. The cheapest version of this job is the one that happens before the next system comes through.

After a storm — do this
  1. Walk the perimeter and look for granules washed into the gutters and downspouts.
  2. Photograph soffit, fascia and gutter damage — adjusters ask for it.
  3. Tarp first, then worry about the permanent repair.
  4. Be wary of out-of-state crews that appear the day after a storm.

Roof-to-wall connection FAQs

What are roof-to-wall connections?

The hardware that ties roof trusses or rafters to the walls. Florida rates them on the wind mitigation form as toe nails, clips, single wraps or double wraps.

What is the difference between clips and straps?

Clips attach to one side of the truss. Single wraps and double wraps are straps that wrap over the top of the truss, which gives more uplift resistance and a higher rating.

Do hurricane straps lower insurance in Florida?

Documented stronger roof-to-wall connections can earn larger wind mitigation credits. The credit depends on what the inspector can verify and on your insurer.

Can hurricane straps be added during a roof replacement?

In some homes, connections can be reinforced when the eaves or framing are exposed. What is practical depends on the framing, and it should be assessed on site.

Why does the wind mitigation inspection need attic photos?

The state form OIR-B1-1802 was rewritten effective April 1, 2026 and now requires attic photos to support the ratings.
